Fixed-spade entrenching tool with carrying case.

Early, non-folding pattern, entrenching tool consists of a lathed hardwood construction handle with an enlarged ball head for ease of handling and a slightly curved, tooled steel construction shovel head. The handle is secured to the shovel head by dual extended steel sleeves with two flush, flat head retaining rivets. The obverse extended sleeve is integral to the shovel head while the reverse sleeve ia a separate triangular plate that is secured to the shovel head by five flat headed rivets. The obverse of the shovel is well marked with an unknown, stamped, manufacturers animal head logo. The shovel head shows moderate pitting. The shovel comes with a second pattern, simulated, black grained leather, pressed cardboard (presstoff) construction "close-back", entrenching tool carrying case with leather and steel fitings. The case features a triple layered, closed back frame in the shape of the entrenching tools head with machine stitched, outer edge seams. The top edge of the case has two, vertically extended, black leather belt loops designed to secure the case to the individuals load carrying waist belt. The bottom edge of the case has a single layered, horizontal presstoff panel with a diagonally angled, black leather closure strap to the right hand side and a corresponding leather reinforced, pronged, steel, roller buckle to the left hand side. The closure strap would be wrapped around the handle of the entrenching tool to secure it in the case. The case is in overall good condition.
